What to expect in your first session
Taking the first step towards therapy can feel daunting. You may be feeling nervous, uncertain, curious, hopeful or perhaps a combination of all of these. Whatever has brought you here, I want to acknowledge the courage it takes to even consider reaching out for support.
Our journey begins with a free consultation phone call. This is an opportunity for us to connect, discuss what brings you to therapy and explore whether we feel like a good fit to work together. You may have clear reasons for seeking therapy, or you may simply know that something doesn't feel quite right and want support in understanding it. Both are completely valid.
Following our call, I will send you a confidential contract to complete. These forms include practical information and allow me to gather some background details before we begin our work together.
As someone who works closely with the LGBTQ+ community, I understand that legal documents do not always reflect a person's lived identity. I strive to create a space where you can bring your authentic self. My forms include space for your chosen name, pronouns, and how you identify, ensuring you are addressed and respected in a way that feels right for you.
When we meet for our first session, there is no expectation for you to have everything figured out. You might have something specific you would like to discuss, you might be carrying a number of concerns, or you may not know where to start at all. Wherever you are in your journey, you are welcome exactly as you are.
Building a strong therapeutic relationship is important to me. I believe trust develops over time and I aim to create a warm, compassionate space where you feel safe enough to explore your thoughts, feelings and experiences at your own pace.
My approach is rooted in humanistic values, which means I see you as a whole person rather than a diagnosis or a set of symptoms. Together we will explore your unique experiences, strengths, challenges and aspirations with curiosity, care and compassion. I take a holistic view of wellbeing, recognising that our emotional, mental, physical, and social experiences are all interconnected.
Throughout my work, I have had the privilege of supporting individuals with a wide range of mental health difficulties and life experiences. Yet above all else, I see the person first. I am committed to listening attentively, honouring your autonomy and supporting you in making choices that feel meaningful and authentic to you.
My hope is that by reading this, you feel a little more reassured about what to expect. Therapy doesn't require you to have all the answers before you begin. Sometimes, the first step is simply showing up.
If you are considering starting therapy, I would be honoured to support you on your journey, and I look forward to hearing from you.
